  • For shade: astilbe, ferns, brunnera, mahonia
  • Ornamental grasses: pennisetum, miscanthus, blue fescue

How we plan a bed that looks good all summer

The classic mistake: you buy everything that is in bloom in May, get a peak of colour for 4 weeks, then a long, flat green stretch. The answer is succession: we choose plants that bloom in waves. Bulbs for April, irises for May, hydrangeas and echinacea for July, sedum and asters for September. On top of that we add ornamental grasses that give texture all autumn, and sometimes even in winter under the snow.

Mulch: the secret to watering less

A 5–7 cm layer of organic mulch (pine bark, leaf compost, cocoa shells) cuts watering by 40%, blocks weeds and keeps the soil cool in July. We top it up every spring. For visible areas we choose pine bark, which looks clean; for the back of the garden, compost that enriches the soil over time.

Four stages, no surprises at the end.

  1. Choosing the plants

We look at exposure (sun or shade), soil type and what you want to see from the house. We choose combinations that bloom in waves, so there is never a moment without colour.

  2. Soil preparation

We dig to the depth the plants need, add topsoil, compost and, for acid-loving plants, peat. We check the drainage.

  3. Planting

We plant at the correct spacing (many beds look sparse at first, which is right: the plants need room to fill out over 2 years without crowding each other). We water thoroughly and mulch.

  4. Maintenance

Deadheading, monthly feeding in season, dividing perennials every 3–4 years, replacing annuals in spring and summer.

What clients ask us.

Do you bring the plants, or do I buy them?

We bring them, from trusted local nurseries. On a tight budget we can give you a list of reliable places to buy and come just for the planting, but you lose the plant guarantee.

How many maintenance visits are needed?

For a medium-sized flower bed: 8–10 visits a year. Choose an annual contract with a fixed schedule, or pay per visit when you need us.

Do you plant trees too, not just flowers?

Yes, ornamental trees (maple, willow, magnolia, prunus) and fruit trees: apple, pear, cherry, plum, quince. For large trees we recommend planting in late autumn or early spring.

Which plants resist deer and rabbits outside the city?

Lavender, salvia, catmint, echinacea, daffodils, allium. Roses and hostas are a magnet, so we only plant them with protection. We recommend a 1.5 m fence and/or repellents during critical periods.
