Why lawns sown without preparation fail

Most poor lawns in Chișinău share the same cause: the soil was never prepared. Seed scattered on compacted clay germinates unevenly and leaves gaps that weeds fill, and within 2 years the lawn becomes a patchwork of grass, dandelion and plantain. Soil preparation (rotavating, amending, levelling) is 70% of the work behind a lawn that still looks good after 10 years.

The seed mix we use

For residential yards in Moldova we use a mix of perennial ryegrass, red fescue and garden fescue. Ryegrass germinates fast and covers the ground in 14–21 days; red fescue brings drought tolerance and a fine texture over the long term; garden fescue tolerates partial shade under trees. For very sunny yards, we increase the share of creeping red fescue so the lawn can handle the July heat.

Month-by-month care plan

  • April: first mow, nitrogen-rich fertiliser, aeration
  • May–June: weekly mowing at 5–6 cm, deep watering twice a week
  • July–August: mowing at 7–8 cm for drought tolerance, deep watering early in the morning
  • September: autumn potassium feed to prepare for winter
  • October–November: final mow at 4 cm, clearing fallen leaves

Four stages, no surprises at the end.

  1. Soil assessment

We test pH and texture. For clay soils (common in Chișinău) we recommend soil amendments. For loess and sandy soils, we adjust the seed mix.

  2. Ground preparation

We clear existing vegetation, rotavate, add topsoil where needed, level and roll. All perennial weeds are removed roots and all.

  3. Seeding and first watering

We spread the seed evenly with a professional spreader, cover it with a thin layer of soil and start watering. For the first 14 days we keep the soil constantly moist.

  4. Seasonal care

First mow at 8–10 cm, then weekly mowing, spring and autumn feeding, yearly aeration and selective weed control.

What clients ask us.

When is the best time to sow a lawn in Moldova?

There are two windows: April–May (warm soil, frequent rain, minimal frost risk) and late August–September (the heat has passed, the soil is still warm). Sowing in July is possible but needs intensive watering.

How soon can I walk on the lawn after seeding?

Light foot traffic after ~6 weeks, once the grass has been mown 2–3 times. Normal use (play, garden furniture) after ~10 weeks.

What is the difference between seeding and roll lawn?

Roll lawn gives an instant result (1 day). The labour starts at the same price, but the rolls cost far more than seed. Seeding takes patience (6–10 weeks) and a smaller budget. For new yards with young children, roll lawn is the better fit. See our roll lawn installation service.

Does maintenance include weed control?

Yes. We apply selective treatments in spring and autumn: herbicides that remove weeds without harming the grass. The rest of the time we rely on good practice (correct mowing, balanced feeding), which naturally keeps weeds down.
