When to trim thuja, boxwood and hedges

In Moldova the first trim comes at the end of May or in June, after the spring growth, and the second at the end of August. We stop by mid-September: new shoots would not harden before winter and would be damaged by frost. Fast-growing hedges such as privet need an extra trim in July.

The shapes we make

  • Cone: the classic shape for Smaragd thuja, easy to keep with two trims a year
  • Spiral: the most precise work, as every turn has to stay even and equally deep
  • Ball: for boxwood and globe thuja, on the ground or on a stem
  • Hedge: slightly narrower at the top than at the base, so light reaches the bottom and the hedge does not go bare there

The mistake that ruins a thuja

Thuja does not grow new foliage from old brown wood. Cutting too deep leaves gaps that never close. That is why we only cut into green growth, and bring overgrown shapes back gradually, over two or three seasons.

Four stages, no surprises at the end.

  1. Assessment

We look at the species, height, the plant's condition and the shape you want. You get the price before we start.

  2. Shaping

We cut the structure first (the spiral's axis, the profile of the cone or ball), then finish the surface with hand or electric shears.

  3. Finishing

We correct the details up close, shake the clippings out of the plant and clear everything that fell on the lawn and paths.

  4. Upkeep

A crisp shape usually needs 2–3 trims a year. We suggest a schedule that suits the species and your garden.

What clients ask us.

How much does it cost to trim a thuja into a spiral?

From 200 MDL per metre. The final price depends on the plant's height, how overgrown it is and how clearly the spiral still shows. For a thuja left untrimmed for several years, restoring the shape can take two seasons.

How often should a hedge be trimmed?

Thuja and boxwood twice a year: at the end of May or in June, and at the end of August. Fast-growing species such as privet need three trims.

Can you shape a thuja that has never been trimmed?

Yes, if the plant is healthy and dense. Cones and balls usually take shape in the first season; a spiral needs 2–3 seasons to read clearly.

What if the boxwood has disease or moth?

Box tree moth and leaf spot are common in Moldova. If we find them while trimming, we tell you straight away and suggest the right treatment. See our plant disease and pest control service.
